Due to interest from current paddlers, CANI will be running a Talent ID fitness testing session on the 3rd of February for interested Belfast-based juniors who already have some paddling experience. Following the fitness testing session our Performance Coach, Kieran Dews, will run a training session for the participants. Paddlers who have already attended a fitness testing session through their school or otherwise are welcome to also attend this session or arrange to come only for the training session. Please contact Kieran to register your interest.
As we are looking for juniors that show athletic talent and traits that will transfer specifically to the Canoe/Kayak Sprint discipline, but do not necessarily have previous paddling experience, all participants will still need to meet testing requirements to be invited to further phases of Talent ID testing and their paddling experience will not be taken into account in the selection process so to treat everyone with an equal opportunity to participate in the program.
Beyond the Sprint Futures program, we hope to work with clubs and individuals to help develop strong performance-focused training programs to meet the needs of those at all experience levels so that no future athlete is left without some form of pathway into the high-performance side of our sport.

What to bring: Suitable clothing to undertake off-water fitness testing (running, jumping, etc.), suitable clothing to paddle in and your paddling equipment (boat, paddle, etc.), towel and warm clothes to change into following the session. Warm showers and changing facilities are on-site at the boat club. If you are unable to bring a boat and/or paddle for you to use please contact Kieran to arrange use of CANI equipment.
