River Bann – Kayak Incident

There was a kayak incident on the River Bann on Sunday 14th November.

There was a kayak incident on the Bann on Sunday 14th November. A kayak and kayaker became trapped upside down underneath the weir in an undercut that has formed in the middle of the weir. The incident happened at the first weir downstream of the Ballydown Road Bridge in Banbridge, also known as the Farmers Club access point. On Tuesday 16th November the weir was inspected to see what deterioration has caused a problem in the middle of the river, the corrosion/damage that has occurred to the weir has created a serious undercut under the weir which extends back a metre to a meter and half.

Until further notice we recommend this weir is portaged to avoid a repeat incident. CANI / Sport N.I are in discussions with Rivers Agency to fix the damage.
