North West Coaching Awards 2014 Supporting Information
This section gives descriptions of the award categories, together with key evidence the judging panel will look for when making its decision. These descriptions are particularly useful when completing the nomination forms.
Awards for Coaches
These awards are for individual coaches who have shown outstanding commitment and achieved excellent results in a certain area or with a certain individual and/or group over the last 12 months.
HIGH PERFORMANCE COACH OF THE YEAR
This award recognises the achievements of a coach in the development of athletes or teams in high performance sport.
What we are looking for:
• Evidence of innovative practice
• Evidence of player-centred, high-quality coaching that encourages the development of performance within sport.
• Evidence that the coach has assisted the improvement of athletes or teams by helping them achieve success or advance their development at high performance level.
TALENT COACH OF THE YEAR
This award recognises the achievements of a coach in developing talented athletes or teams in sport.
What we are looking for:
• Evidence of innovative practice
• Evidence of player-centred, high-quality coaching that encourages the development of performance within sport and nurtures talent.
• Evidence that the coach has assisted the improvement of athletes or teams by helping them achieve success or advance their performances.
YOUNG COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award recognises the important work carried out by an up-and-coming coach through his or her achievements to date.
What we are looking for:
• A coach who is 25 years of age or under (on 30th January 2015)
• Evidence of creativity and determination in development as a coach
• Evidence of the provision of opportunities and dedicated support to performers to help them reach their goals
• Examples of innovative practice.
CHILDREN’S COACH OF THE YEAR
This award recognises the outstanding contribution of a children’s coach to the development of basic skills (within the FUNdamentals and Learning to Play and Practice stages of the Participation Development Model).
What we are looking for:
• A coach of young people under the age of 16
• Evidence of the development of basic skills through fun in sport
• Evidence of appropriate player-centred engagement and high-quality coaching
• Examples of innovative practice.
Note: Nominations for coaches working with talented young athletes should be made in the Coach of the Year category, not the Children’s Coach.
COMMUNITY COACH OF THE YEAR
This award recognises the outstanding contribution of a coach to getting more people starting, staying and/or succeeding in sport through high-quality coaching.
What we are looking for:
• Evidence of the impact the coach has had on widening access to sport through high-quality coaching
• Evidence of working within a specific community, particularly low-participation groups
•Examples of innovative practice.

Key points to consider:
• Nominations should include evidence to support and illustrate the impact of the coach in the category specified. This evidence should be supported with facts and figures where possible.
• The North West Coaching Network covers the local authority areas of Derry, Strabane,
Omagh & Fermanagh and counties Donegal and Sligo.
• All nominees must hold a recognised governing body of sport coaching qualification.
• Governing body endorsement must be sought prior to submission. This can be organised through the lead coaching officer or through the NW Coaching Network if required.
• All nominees should have made a significant impact on increasing opportunities for participation and/or improving athletes’ performance within the period 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014.
• The judging panel can only take into account information supplied on the nomination
form.
• Evidence should be provided to highlight the following:
– Safe, player-centred coaching
Evidence of how the coach safeguards his or her athlete(s)’ and provides suitable
coaching to meet their needs for their stage of development.
– Coaching with legacy
Evidence of how the coach has left a lasting legacy within the sport or environment. This could be through the development of other coaches, the lasting opportunities now available to participants or alternative enhancement within the sport. It also includes the development of a specific athlete or group of athletes.
