Check out this piece below Sean and Conleth McLarnon about their experience at the Irish Open Slalom Race this month!!!
We had the opportunity to try out for Irish Team Selection and compete in the Irish Open Slalom race at the weekend.
It was great to have the support of our coach Matt with us enabling us to walk the course on both Saturday and Sunday and to provide on the spot feedback after we had all completed our runs. Also, having other squad members and families there meant we could all support and cheer each other on throughout the weekend. (Ali, Jake, Tiernan, Patrick, Beth, Zoe, Cade & Elliot)
At 14, selection for the U-18 team was always going to be a challenge for the two of us as the standard is very high but that didn’t stop us trying as there’s always a chance. Sean quite recently changed from K1 to C1 so had the extra task of racing in both disciplines, a double experience. As expected there were a few nerves, though Sunday was more settled.
Both days lived up to our expectations, with Saturday being the tougher of the two courses offering a few challenging gates. Thankfully the weather was on our side with Sunday being a little bit windier but it stayed dry. The races were well organised on both days, with little change from the planned running order meaning we all knew when our individual runs would be and the times/scores were all posted quickly.
We enjoyed the experience and were both pleased to come away with medals from the Irish Open on Sunday; Sean came 2nd in J16 CI and Conleth came 3rd in J16 K1 but everyone did really well.
As well as the medals, we’ve taken away plenty from the weekend. We know what the standard is like for team selection and that a lot of hard work, drive, determination and training is needed to make selection achievable in the future.
We’re looking forward to getting back to training and competing in more races in the coming months.
