The restoration of the Lagan Canal is well under way and CANI and Lisburn City Paddlers are working closely with the Lagan Canal Trust on the restoration of Becky Hoggs Weir, Union Locks, Stranmillis Weir and the relocation of Shaw’s Bridge slalom course.
On the 24th February 2016 members of CANI Council and Lisburn City Paddlers were invited to Navigation House in Lisburn to hear about the future plans and current progress in the project.
After refreshments Brenda Turnbull, Chief Officer for the Trust and John, one of the engineers involved in the project, talked us through the plans and explained some of the opportunities that could be available to paddlers in the future. These ranged from a large enclosed flat water area for beginners or polo events to moving water features under the new weirs. It is proposed that the tow path will be extended to allow for more walking and cycling.
