Discipline Support Module Weekend – Feb 2015

The Discipline Support Modules are designed to assist Coaches who currently hold British Canoeing Coaching Qualifications, and who want to gain more knowledge about some of the more specialist disciplines

On Saturday 7th February the Slalom Discipline Support Module 1 was delivered by Russell Smith from Canoe England. It was great that the course was full, nine people from clubs who run Junior Bladers programmes and those who help with development squad arrived at the indoor bowls club. The morning was spent in the classroom looking at the technical, tactical, physical and psychological side of slalom and also looking at slalom specific manoeuvres such as downstream gates, staggers and of course the evil in the upstream gates. The afternoon was based at Shaws Bridge where the coaches had the opportunity to coach and develop these skills. When the training was taking place Matthew McKnight was orientated to become a deliverer of this module.

On Sunday 8th February the Sprint Discipline Support Module 1 was also delivered by Russell Smith from Canoe England. On the Sunday we had another full course. Ten people from clubs who run Junior Bladers programmes and those who help with development squad arrived at the indoor bowls club. The morning was spent in the classroom looking at the technical, tactical, physical and psychological side of sprint as well as all the specifics around forward paddling. Then the Ergo machine was used to observe what forward paddling should be and how to develop the correct chain of movement. The afternoon was based at Minnowburn on the Lagan, where the coaches had the opportunity to coach and develop these skills. When the training was taking place Matthew McKnight and Ray Sweetlove were orientated to become deliverers of this module.

All who attended the courses and Russ the tutor learned a lot from the training and had 2 enjoyable days.

Keep an eye out in the future for these courses as these are highly recommended for all levels of coaches in their development.
