Charity Paddle of Alzheimer’s Societies both North & South

Our Story: Our Grandfather was recently diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy Bodies. This illness is similar to Alzheimer’s but also includes aspects of Parkinson’s disease, namely those affecting the body’s mobility. Thanks to research financed by the Alzheimer’s Society, there are now medicines that can slow down the progress of this disease and which have afforded us some invaluable ‘extra time’ with our Grandfather. For this reason, we decided that we wanted to do something to raise money for the charity in return, not only for its research department, but also for those departments involved in supporting patient’s carers.

Our Mission and Route: To kayak the 550 miles between Coleraine and Waterford, using the internal waterways of the North and South of Ireland to raise money for ‘The Alzheimer’s Societies’ of both the UK and Ireland. On the 20th June, 2010 at 0900hrs, there will be a launch party in Coleraine after which, clad in Morph suits, we will kayak up the River Bann to Lough Neagh and then on to Lough Erne following the old Ulster Canal. Next we will journey via the Erne Navigation System before joining The River Shannon, The Grand Canal and our final destination, Waterford, on The River Barrow. As far as we are aware, this is the first time this has been attempted. We hope to achieve this journey, unaided, within a month, and any waterside support would be very welcome!

The Team: Collectively known as ‘The Morphs’, our team is composed of two sets of brothers from related families. Charlie Cole, 21, is currently at The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester and Sandy Cole, 19, is at Trinity College, Dublin. Shane Traill, 20, is at Coleraine Polytechnic and Paddy Traill, 18, is a pupil at Ballycastle High School. Collectively we have vey little Kayaking Experience!

Our goal: By undertaking this feat, we hope to raise over £20,000 for The Alzheimer’s Societies’ of the North and South of Ireland, and to raise public awareness of the work they do.
