BCU Awarding Body (BCUAB) has implemented a number of changes to the BCU Level 1 and 2 Certificates in Coaching Paddlesport, for all courses starting after 1st January 2014. These updates are required in response to changes in the National Occupational Standards affecting learning and assessment criteria for UKCC endorsed qualifications. This has also provided BCUAB with the opportunity to implement updates recommended from our own internal review of the qualifications to ensure meet the needs of our sport.
BCUAB has worked together with the Home Nation Association Delivery Centres throughout the development phase.
Level 1
On the surface the updated qualification will look very similar to the current version, with the award still focused around planning, delivering and reviewing single coaching sessions, normally under supervision. The assessment will follow a similar format to current tasks; although the written paper is to be removed, and the workbook strengthened in its place.
Level 2
The most significant change to Level 2 is the option of three different assessment routes. The Level 2 training will remain generic; however candidates may then choose if they do kayak assessment, canoe assessment, or both.
These changes will have an impact on delivery. Here follows a summary of the changes;
•Single discipline assessments will run over 1-day (i.e. candidates assessed in canoe OR kayak)
•Combined discipline assessments will run over 1-day (i.e. candidates assessed in canoe AND kayak)
•Candidates training (or transfer course) is valid for 12-months, in which time they must have been certificated in at least one award
•Candidates with a BCU (UKCC) Canoe or Kayak Level 2, can progress to the other at any time
Further guidance will be issued directly to all Level 2 trainees to outline their future options and how they can progress to the various assessment options.
The candidate materials for both awards are finalised and will be printed in January 2014, these will be issued to candidates registering for courses in 2014. If you have already registered and are attending a course in 2014, please contact CANI to obtain the new candidate materials.
