The Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) was formed in 1964 and is the governing body responsible for the management, co-ordination, development and promotion of paddlesports in Northern Ireland. It represents the interests of its members to government, the public, and through British Canoeing to the International Canoe Federation.
CANI is the Northern Ireland division of British Canoeing which is the governing body for the UK. CANI, through British Canoeing is affiliated to the International Canoe Federation.
In 2017, CANI became a registered company, CANI is currently run by a voluntary board which is elected at the AGM each year. To assist the board with developments, there are a number of specialist sub-committees.

The Strategy for Paddlesport in Northern Ireland 2023 – 2028
Our 2023-2028 strategy, which will shape our direction for the next five years and aims to produce opportunities to see paddlesport grow and flourish in Northern Ireland. Extensive consultation with clubs, volunteers, commercial providers, and other outside agencies has enabled CANI to produce a Strategy that will meet the needs of our members and stakeholders and will promote the enjoyment and development of paddlesport supporting the delivery of key objectives and serving as a mechanism to overcome challenges.
The CANI Vision is to ‘Inspire people to paddle’.
We aim to attract people from all backgrounds to paddle for health,
enjoyment, friendship, challenge and achievement.
