CANI Away Trip – Explore the Shannon Blueway – Friday 29th July to Monday 1st August

This recreational paddle is suitable and open to families, clubs, paddlers of all ages and abilities and can be paddled in any type of craft. So dust down your boat and come and join us on these social paddles.  If you don’t have a boat you can hire an open canoe from CANI.  Appropriate paddling kit should be brought, everyone should also be self-sufficient for camping i.e: food, stove and tent etc

This recreational paddle is subject to weather conditions.

Meet and Trip Plan:

Meet at Lough Allen Canal for 11.00am, to pack boats for the trip and arrange shuttle to Roosky.

Day 1 – Start at Lough Allen Canal, then travel south along the Shannon through Lough Achres to finish the first days paddle at Battlebridge Lock. First nights camp Battlebridge Lock – approx 6K

Day 2 – Will start by continuing south on the Shannon through Leitrim and on down the Shannon through Lough Corry for the second nights camp at the bottom of Lough Corry. Second nights camp Lough Corry – approx 15K

Day 3 – Leave Lough Corry and continue north east on the Shannon, then paddle south east through the Jamestown Canal to Lough Nanoge. From here the paddle will continue south into Lough Tap, Lough Boderg and Lough Bofin for the third nights camp at Rabbit Island. Third nights camp Rabbit Island – approx 13K

Day 4 – Will finish with a short paddle from Rabbit Island into Roosky. Finish point Roosky – approx 4K

Depending on weather conditions, there may be some small changes to the trip.

The route is a mix of Canals, Loughs, and Rivers dotted with small islands to explore. The trip is suitable for open boats and sea kayaks. There will be 3 nights wild camping so participants need to bring the following.

  • Tent
  • Sleeping mat – Optional, but would make the experience more comfortable
  • Sleeping bag
  • Stove / pots
  • Fuel
  • Enough food for the trip
  • Cup, plate, KFS.
  • Water
  • Chair – Optional, but would make the experience more comfortable
  • Head torch
  • Waterproofs
  • Warm clothing
  • Suitable footwear for in and out of the boat
  • Spare clothes
  • Canoe or Sea Kayak for the trip.
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Paddles
  • Bailer / sponge

Costs:
The cost of this trip will be as follows;

CANI Members

£35.00 per adult

£15.00 per youth

Non Members

£53.00 per adult

£25.00 per youth
The cost for Boat hire will be £10.00 to CANI Members and £15.00 for Non Members if you require Boat, Paddle, and Buoyancy Aid please note it in the additional information on the booking form.

“If you plan to take part in more than one recreation paddle why not take out recreational membership at a cost of £18 per year or family membership at a cost of £25 introductory and £5 for each additional member per year.  This would be much more economical, as recreational paddles are free to all members and the cost of boat hire is at a reduced price.”
