Junior and U23 World Canoe Slalom Championships 201, Foz do Iguaca, Brazil

Congratulations and good luck to CANI slalom athletes, Ali McCreery (K1 under 18’s), Jake Cochrane (U23 C1) and Elliott Davidson (U23 K1) who have qualified for, and are competing at this event in April.

Selections for the Irish Slalom Team were held in Nottingham last October, during the HPP Premier Race weekend. All runs times and places were noted. The athletes competing for Irish Team places aim to rank highly but also, whatever the age, there is a required percentage of the winning time to be achieved in order to qualify . This was set by the first place K1 male, which  in this case, was by Joe Clarke,  from Stafford and Stone Slalom Club who is on the GB Team.

For these three members of the NI Talent Squad, Jake, Ali and Elliott, the training has continued in all weathers throughout the winter.  They have attended training camps in Lee Valley, Nottingham, Belfast and Dublin and have also had to show discipline in order to continue training daily, often as individuals.

Matt McKnight has coached most of these camps (and been lead coach for Ali and Jake) and will be travelling with the athletes to Brazil to coach during before and during the racing period.

The competition is from 22nd – 26th April, and they will be flying out a couple of weeks before this to acclimatise and train on the course.  The slalom course runs off the River Iguaçu which leads to the famous Foz do Iguaçu Falls. It is directly on the Brazilian border with Paraguay and Argentina. The weather should be good and there will be plenty to see in any rest times off the water.

We wish them well in their racing, and look forward to hearing about their travel experiences in such a distant and beautiful location. The Championships will be televised and links will be posted on CANI Facebook so we can all watch the progress of the teams.
