Canoe Sprint Programme Strategy 2018-22

2018

Development Squad

This squad consists of up to eight paddlers who have emerged through club-based programs with the aims of competing at the highest level within the Canoe Sprint discipline. To achieve this, the Development Squad train up to ten sessions per week including gym sessions and develop knowledge, skills, and experience to benefit their racing and athletic lifestyle. This program, along with the Sprint Futures programme, operate out of the Belfast Boat Club. This squad will be placed in temporary hiatus between 2020 and 2022 and the Development Squad paddlers will transition into the CANI Talent Squad and Club Programs in 2020.

To apply for the Development Squad please email Kieran with your most recent race times and relevant paddling experience as per our Canoe Sprint Development Squad page.

Sprint Futures 2018

Launched in 2018, this squad was Northern Ireland’s inaugural Sprint Futures Programme based on British Canoeing’s success through English Sprint Futures Programmes. This squad consists of ten paddlers, aged 12-14, with little to no previous paddling experience with the aims of fast-tracking them onto a British Sprint Team to represent Team GB at Olympic Hopes and/or Junior World Championships within two years. These paddlers will transition into the CANI Talent Squad and Club Programs in 2020.

Club Programs

Currently there is one club-based flatwater training squad operated by Belfast Canoe Club, training on the Lagan at Shaw’s Bridge. CANI encourage and will assist other clubs in setting up a similar training groups with other clubs.

Please note: Athletes who compete under CANI (CNI in the regatta system) do so as a squad paddler and not a club paddler; CANI does not earn points at club regattas and encourage athletes to recognise the club that helped them progress through our Performance Pathway.

2020

Talent Programme

Re-launching in 2020, the Talent Programme will consist of the top eight sprint paddlers in Northern Ireland. This squad will be coached by the Head Sprint Coach and will be formed by paddlers from the Development Programme, Sprint Futures 2018 Squad, and Club Program athletes. This group will complete a full weekly training program and benefit from educational opportunities to support their development through SINI Support Services with the aim of developing athletes to achieve their peak potential and earn a spot as a British Canoeing Program Athlete.

Sprint Futures 2020

This will be the second intake of Sprint Futures athletes for CANI. This squad will consist of eight paddlers, aged 12-14, with little to no previous paddling experience with the aims of fast-tracking them onto a British Sprint Team to represent Team GB at Olympic Hopes and/or Junior World Championships within two years. These paddlers will transition into the CANI Talent Programme, CANI Development Programme, and Club Programs in 2022.

Club Programs

CANI anticipates that there will be two to three high-performing club-based Sprint Training squads across Northern Ireland. These squads will fit into the CANI Performance Pathway with the aims of producing high-level athletes to go on and represent Northern Ireland and GB/IRL internationally.

2022

Talent Programme

The Talent Programme will consist of the top eight sprint paddlers in Northern Ireland. This squad will be coached by the Head Sprint Coach and will be formed by paddlers from the Development Programme, Sprint Futures 2020 Squad, and Club Program athletes. This group will complete a full weekly training program and benefit from educational opportunities to support their development through SINI Support Services with the aim of developing athletes to achieve their peak potential and earn a spot as a British Canoeing Program Athlete.

Development Programme

Re-launching in 2022, the Development Programme will consist or the next tier of athletes below the Talent Programme, with a maximum of eight paddlers. This programme will be coached by the Performance Sprint Coach and will be formed by paddlers from the Development Programme, Sprint Futures 2020 Squad, and Club Programme athletes. This group will complete a full weekly training program and benefit from educational opportunities to support their development through SINI Support Services with the aim of developing athletes to achieve their peak potential and earn a spot as a British Canoeing Program Athlete.

Sprint Futures 2022

In 2022 the Sprint Futures Programme will transition to be a club-based programmes with two to three clubs being supported to run complimentary programmes across Northern Ireland.

Club Programs

CANI anticipates that there will be three to five high-performing club-based Sprint Training squads across Northern Ireland. These squads will fit into the CANI Performance Pathway with the aims of producing high-level athletes to go on and represent Northern Ireland and GB/IRL internationally.

Remote Athletes

CANI recognises that there is and will be a number of athletes pursuing high performance in Canoe Sprint that are not based in or near Belfast and would be unable to attend training sessions on a regular basis. To accommodate for these athletes, and their club/home coaches, who join a CANI Performance Programme will be supported to deliver the same training program as closely as possible as to how it is delivered by the CANI Sprint Coaches.

Club/Coach Support

In addition to the programmes above, CANI wants to work with and support existing and developing club squads and coaches to help build a bigger and stronger foundation to our performance pathway. To do this, CANI would like to:

  • Assist Club Paddlers with boat transport to regattas where possible,
  • Hold open sessions for all sprint paddlers to attend,
  • And provide coaching support and/or mentoring at three different levels;
    • Technical Guidance including visits from a CANI Sprint Coach
    • Mentoring through CANI Programmes (attending CANI Programme sessions to experience and learn what is, and how it is, being delivered)
    • Support of Club Program through both of the above and provision of CANI training program and how to modify it to suit the level of paddlers in the Club Program.

If you or your club are interested in discussing this, please contact our Performance Coach.
