BANGOR HARBOUR MARINA

It has been brought to CANI’s attention by Bangor marina that there have been some canoeists accessing the coast through the marina; this is not an issue however the way in which it is carried out is.

I have met with the marina manager and we have discussed a number of near misses between canoeists and boats both entering and leaving the marina. What we both are keen to do is to maintain the access to the marina by encouraging canoeists to notify the marina office when they are getting on the water. CANI feel it is important to cooperate with the marina with this request.

The marina manager and I would like to invite a representative from your club / group to a meeting on the 30th June at 7.30 at the Bangor Marina. The focus of this meeting will be to discuss a reasonable agreement for canoeists using the marina and ultimately maintain access and prevent any accidents in the future.

If you or a club representative is available to attend the meeting contact me before the 27th June.

LETTER FROM BANGOR HARBOUR MASTER

BANGOR HARBOUR & MARINA

SAFETY NOTICE TO ALL USERS OF CANOES, KAYAKS, ROWING BOATS AND ALL OTHER CRAFT PROPELLED BY OARS OR PADDLES.

You have been handed this notice because you have not advised the Operators of the Harbour & Marina of your intention to use the slipway or to engage in activities within the marina or harbour limits.

The instruction to notify us is clearly displayed on a notice at the slipway. There is increasing activity within Bangor harbour and marina and large, powerful vessels navigate, manoeuvre and berth within the marina and harbour limits.

Even when alongside, these vessels may test engines or bow thrusters, causing a wash capable of capsizing small craft.

You are instructed, in future and in your own interest, to advise the marina office of your intentions and to seek permission to launch from the slipway.

Clause 58 of North Down Borough Council’s Bangor Harbour Bye-Laws 2005 is clear on this point, as follows:

No person shall bathe or engage in sub-aqua swimming, wind surfing, jet skiing, canoeing, rowing or group activities within the harbour without the consent of the harbour master and only in such areas as may be designated by the harbour master and in accordance with such reasonable conditions as he may impose.

Should you require further advice, a copy of the Harbour Bye Laws, or would like to discuss this notice with someone, please contact Quay Marinas Limited.
